American Indian Parent Council

Applications open to hire additional school liaisons

The Prairie Island Indian Community and Red Wing Public Schools have a cooperative agreement that places liaisons in local schools. The Tribal Council recently voted to add positions. Applications are open; click the link buttons below.

The individuals hired will work with the current liaisons: Mitch Skeen at RWHS and Ana Pena-Marcelino at the elementary schools.

About AIPC

Minnesota Statute 124D.78, subdivision 1 states that a school district in which there are 10 or more American Indian students enrolled must establish an American Indian education advisory committee — known in Red Wing as the American Indian Parent Council (and formerly the American Indian Education Advisory Council). These committees serve in an advisory role and help ensure that American Indian students are receiving culturally relevant and equitable educational opportunities. These committees are critical to the achievement and success of American Indian students statewide and offer a valuable opportunity to strengthen district and parent partnerships.

AIPC membership

AIPCs must be primarily parents or guardians of American Indian students within the district, charter school, or tribal school. Other eligible committee members include American Indian secondary students, American Indian district staff, and American Indian community members. Additionally, family members of American Indian students, such as grandparents or older siblings, are also eligible to serve on this committee.

Non-Native district staff may participate in the AIPC meetings, but they are not permitted to be voting committee members and should not be included on the AIPC roster.

The American Indian Parent Council helps to ensure that students are receiving culturally relevant and equitable educational opportunities. For example, each year Burnside Elementary School fourth-graders add to a series of three-dimensional cutouts created using artwork exploring who they are and what are community is ... and should become.
