Mr. Lahammer's 3rd Grade Classroom Website
HowdyGreetings and welcome to our third grade classroom website. You will find many wonderful resources here that can make your life between home and school much easier.  From photo galleries of classroom activities, links to download school forms for your convenience (like our weekly reading log), visit it throughout the school year to see what we're up to.  Bookmark the page for easy access.

I believe that third grade is such a wonderful year of transitions. In math, going from adding and subtracting quickly into more challenging concepts of multiplication and division. In writing, making the move from short sentences to more descriptive sentences with supporting details.  In reading, going beyond reading the words and sentences to predicting, understanding, inferring (reading between the lines) and developing the strategies of a good reader. Also, having an opinion about what you're reading and understanding, supporting, and expressing that view.   Students will work on setting up an independent reading routine at home and building up their reading stamina.

Third grade is also a time where students are expected to take on bigger role in becoming responsible and accountable for completing their work.  Students will be shown how to use the tools they have, such as weekly reading logs, to keep track of their work and become better organized.  There's also the homework room at recess for students who do not have their work completed.

This will be my 21st year of teaching overall and and my 16th in Red Wing (15th in a row for 3rd grade.)  I began my career by teaching 4th grade for five years in Farmington, MN, and I've taught 5th and 3rd grade at Burnside. I have a wonderful wife Margaret who is the Red Wing School District librarian. We've been married over 20 years and have two lovely daughters,  Audrey a senior and Beatrix in 8th grade.

I graduated from Winona State University in 2002 with my major in Elementary Education and a minor in Humor/Sarcasm (my students/parents will agree they are VERY minor.)  In the spring of 2014 I completed my Master's Degree of Science in Education through the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

Prior to becoming a teacher, I worked 14 memorable years as a radio broadcaster/sportscaster, including my last 7 years working at KCUE/KWNG in Red Wing. I enjoy a variety of sports including baseball and tennis, family trips/activities, reading, collecting sports memorabilia, and the flavor vanilla as in taffy and vanilla Tootsie Rolls.  One of my favorite hobbies is theater, and it's not uncommon for me to participate in a play at the Sheldon Theater or Hobgoblin Theater during the school year.
