It is the responsibility of the students, parents/guardians and the school to assure that the student attends school every day classes are in session. Absence for whatever reason is detrimental to a student's success. It is the student's responsibility to make up all work missed due to absence.
In accordance with the regulations of the State Department of Education and the Minnesota Mandatory Attendance Law, students are required to attend all assigned classes and/or study halls every day school is in session. No student will be excused early for work unless he/she is a participant in a school sponsored work program. Students may not leave the premises unless parental permission has been verified by the office.
The administration has the right to determine the acceptability of using school time for personal business. Parent absence requests may be denied or counted as unexcused if they are for reasons other than those listed below. If the student or parent/guardian are unsure if an absence will be excused, contact the Student Services Office.
Extracurricular Activities
Students must be in attendance for the entire normal day to be able to participate in either games, practice sessions, activities or have an excuse acceptable by the administration or the Director of Activities.
More complete information is available in the Parent/Student Handbook.
What To Do If Absent
If a student is not able to attend school, the parent/guardian should call the 24-hour High School Attendance Line (651-385-4660) and leave a message. The message must include the following information:
1. Parent/guardian's name
2. Student's name and grade
3. Reason for absence
4. Date of absence (exact time if absence will be a partial day) - If the parent is unable to call the attendance line, the student should bring a note on the day that he/she returns to school. The note must contain the same information.
Homework Requests
If a student is absent due to illness for more than two days, homework may be obtained by calling the Student Services Office (651-385-4615) before 10:00 a.m. Homework may then be picked up in the office between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.
Automated Attendance Calling System
Red Wing High School uses a computer operated communication system to place a recorded message to the home phone number of any student who has been marked with an unexcused absence. This device will be used every school day in the late afternoon and early evening hours. The system will be able to provide enough information to determine which student was absent along with the periods and dates of the absence. In addition, the parents will have the option to record a message back to the computer during the same call as to why their son or daughter was absent during the day.
This communications system is in place to improve communication to parents, guardians, and students regarding student attendance. The school's attendance policy is based both on the total number of absences and the reasons for the absences. For this reason, we encourage parents and guardians to inquire as to why their child has been marked with an unexcused absence. The calling system enables mistakes to be corrected without delay. Although there may be a few absences that can be cleared up at school, repeated phone calls are a strong indication of an attendance problem.
